Tring, Watford or Mead Open Farm? Impromptu children’s location portraits!

Edlesbrough Church

Edlesbrough Church

Today is the last day of half term for our eldest son and I’m looking after him and his younger brother, so the question was should we:

  • go shopping in Watford
  • visit the natural history museum in Tring
  • or visit Mead Open Farm

As you might guess, Mead Open Farm was the winner. So off we went via Edlesbrough (stopping for a quick picture of the church) and on to the object of the children’s desire! I’m new to this 1/2 term thing, I should have expected it, yes, every other parent from miles around decided that’s the place to take the kids today. I’ve never seen it so busy, the car park was full, as was the overflow. I decided that we wouldn’t brave the crowds, we headed back towards Berkhamsted and stopped at the Common. Both the boys were wearing their wellies and so they went for a walk and I followed them armed with my Canon EOS 5D.  The youngest is still a toddler at 20 months old and isn’t too experienced at running through fields or the woods, he ended up on his bottom quite a lot but at least he was enjoying exploring all around him (even what was on the bottom of his boot!).

Now it’s time to go and feed the ducks down by the canal :-) and no doubt William will want to go for a Bambinocino at one of the coffee shops after.

    If you’re looking for a nice place to walk with the kids and take pics – try Wippendell Wood. It is spectacular in April/May when the Bluebells are in bloom (think purple carpet on the ground) – even in the Autumn & Winter it is great.

    @Aris
    Many thanks for the suggestion Aris. We don’t get out and about in Watford so much in the winter but I’ll keep Wippendell Woods in mind! One of the spots in Watford I like to visit is Batchworth Lakes (Swan picture) – have you been there?

    Oooh, that is a nice shot. Batchworth lakes is by the Aquadrome isn’t it? I go occasionally in the summer – but I have not taken my camera (yet). I have a fair few swans on the Grand Union Canal which is just behind my house.

    If you ever want to go walkabouts to take some pics in and around Rickmansworth/Watford/Croxley on a weekend, let me know.

    Hi Aris,

    Thanks for the kind comment on the swan photo. Yep, Batworth is by the Aquadrome (but I haven’t seen it) and the Grand Union Canal runs right by there too. (And right through the centre of Berkhamsted where my studio is).

    It would be great to meet up and take a few pictures together, when the days get a bit longer and warmer – springs just around the corner :-)

    Ah, so it is. I didn’t realise the canal went that way. I wonder how long it would take to get to Berkhamsted via canal boat.
